Vs. Star Luster
Namco • 1985

Pilot your spacecraft through a vibrant, scrolling landscape in Vs. Star Luster, a cooperative shooter from Namco released in 1985. Two players work together to navigate a series of increasingly challenging environments, battling waves of enemy ships and dodging obstacles with an eight-way joystick and two buttons for firing. The game’s perspective is first-person, immersing the player in the action as they maneuver through colorful space sectors. Vs. Star Luster features simple controls but demands skillful coordination between players to survive. A unique trick allows skilled players to invoke a "Starnoid Call" by simultaneously pressing buttons on all four player controls and initiating the game's start sequence, though its purpose remains mysterious. Sound effects and music were composed by Hiroyuki Kawada, adding to the immersive experience. The title was licensed to Nintendo and later ported to the Sharp X68000 computer in 1994. Its distinctive graphics, rendered at a resolution of 256x240 pixels with a palette of 64 colors, create a visually engaging arcade experience.
