Gameplay

Piloting the "Final Star" spaceship through a series of floating islands in outer space is the task at hand in Tehkan’s 1984 vertical shooter, Star Force. Players cooperate as two ships navigating increasingly challenging levels represented by Greek letters; each level culminates in a showdown with a guardian boss also symbolized by a Greek letter. Success requires destroying waves of enemy spacecraft and ground-based targets while collecting power-ups that enhance the ship’s firepower and size. Throughout gameplay, special symbols appear offering opportunities for bonuses, which can be crucial when facing the relentless advance of level bosses. The game rewards observant players with hidden secrets – like a specific shooting sequence on the violet continent that unlocks a substantial point bonus. Mastering these techniques alongside skillful dodging is essential to progressing through Star Force and achieving high scores. Notably released in Japan as Star Force, it also became known outside of Japan as Megaforce. A sequel, Super Star Force, followed in 1986, and the franchise continued with Final Star Force in 1992, demonstrating a lasting appeal for fans of classic vertical shooters.
