Star Castle (version 3)
Cinematronics • 1980
Also known as: Space Fortress

Star Castle challenges players to navigate a tense space battle centered around a heavily defended fortress. The game presents a unique control scheme utilizing four buttons—thrust, rotate left, rotate right, and fire—rather than a traditional joystick, reminiscent of the classic Asteroids. Players maneuver their ship around the screen, attempting to destroy concentric rings of energy surrounding the central Star Castle while dodging heat-seeking mines launched from those same rings. Scoring is achieved by systematically dismantling these protective shields; however, depleting an entire ring causes it to reappear, complicating the path toward the core target and often drawing the Star Castle’s attention. Successfully destroying the Star Castle awards extra ships and points, but doing so triggers a brief reappearance of both the fortress and its rings, resetting the challenge with increased difficulty. As play continues, the Star Castle and its mines become progressively faster and more reactive, creating an escalating test of skill and reflexes in this battle of man versus machine. The game concludes when all ships are lost, with victory hinging entirely on player proficiency.
