Spy Hunter
Bally Midway • 1983

Take control of a prototype CIA sports car in Spy Hunter, a fast-paced driving and shooting game from Bally Midway. As you navigate a scrolling landscape of roads and waterways, your mission is to destroy enemy vehicles while carefully avoiding civilian traffic – hitting those innocent bystanders will halt your scoring progress. The gameplay alternates between highway chases and riverboat sequences, demanding quick reflexes and strategic use of weapons found at strategically placed Weapons Vans along the road. Initially armed with machine guns, you’ll encounter a variety of adversaries, each possessing unique threats like bulletproof armor or tire-slashing blades. Visiting the Weapons Van allows you to acquire special tools such as oil slicks, smoke screens, and missiles to combat these challenges; however, these are limited in supply and must be replenished. A shifting road system introduces detours that force players into boathouses, transforming their car into a speedboat for aquatic sections of gameplay. While Spy Hunter presents a seemingly endless challenge, the game rewards skillful driving and precise shooting with escalating scores and opportunities to earn extra lives – provided you can dodge those tricky enemies and avoid crashing!
