Gameplay

Konami’s S.P.Y.: Special Project Y. challenges players to thwart an evil mastermind's scheme for world domination in this 1989 action game. Two players utilize jetpacks to navigate a secret island setting, engaging enemies and obstacles as they progress through the levels. The gameplay combines elements of fighting games with a 2.5D perspective, allowing for movement across multiple planes within each stage. Players control spies equipped with specialized abilities and must overcome various challenges, including security forces and automated defenses, to reach their target. The attract sequence draws inspiration from classic James Bond film introductions, setting the tone for a mission-driven experience. A version released in the United States includes an anti-drug message screen. S.P.Y. features a team of developers including Seiji (Director), Yoshi and Akira (Programmers), and Shikasan and P. Fuka as sound composers. The game runs on a Motorola M6809 main CPU, with audio provided by a Zilog Z80 processor alongside Yamaha YM3812 and K007232 chips.
