Spinal Breakers (World)
V-System Co. • 1990

Spinal Breakers is a cooperative third-person shooter released in 1990 by V-System Co., designed for two players. As members of an elite squad, you navigate perilous environments battling robotic enemies and clearing pathways through complex structures. Players control their characters using eight-way joysticks and fire buttons to eliminate threats while advancing toward a shared objective. The game’s unusual perspective and challenging gameplay are hallmarks of its “Cabal” style shoot ‘em up classification. Programmed with a Motorola 68000 processor, Spinal Breakers features music composed on a Yamaha YM2610 sound chip, adding to the immersive experience. Though initially released in Japan in early 1991, American Sammy secured licensing for distribution in the United States, where a cocktail version included an anti-drug message displayed during gameplay. A team of artists and programmers contributed to Spinal Breakers’ development, including Aiz! as programmer and Naoki Itamura handling musical composition. The game’s graphics are signed by several designers under FM CCCP and other collaborative studio names, contributing to its distinctive visual style.
