Gameplay

Navigate twisting mazes in Spectar, an Exidy maze shooter released in 1980 that builds upon the foundation laid by their earlier game, Targ. As you pilot the vehicle Whummel across a grid-based environment, your objective can be achieved through two distinct paths: collecting all the gems scattered within the maze, or eliminating every enemy Rammers present. Enemies continually emerge from flashing pods, demanding constant vigilance and quick reflexes as you maneuver to avoid them while firing at approaching threats. The gameplay is controlled with a four-way joystick for movement and a single button to unleash your weapon against the increasingly intelligent and faster alien invaders – now including Spectars that actively target you. The game’s visuals are notably enhanced compared to its predecessor, featuring ten varied environments like forests and lunar landscapes alongside maze barriers providing both cover and strategic options. Spectar presents a frantic challenge requiring adaptability and precision as you attempt to conquer each level. Scoring is awarded for collecting dots, hitting enemies, and completing entire racks of the maze.
