Space Encounters
Midway • 1980

Navigate a defense ship through expansive corridors in Space Encounters, a shooter from Midway released in 1980. This single-player game presents a unique visual experience with pseudo-3D graphics as you maneuver through the interior of a large space station, confronting enemy forces and dodging debris left behind by destroyed opponents. The gameplay focuses on rapidly increasing speed to outrun pursuing enemies while systematically eliminating them within the station’s complex layout. Players control their ship using a joystick and a single button for firing, working their way deeper into the station environment. A central Intel 8080 processor powers the game's visuals and sound, utilizing an SN76477 chip alongside discrete circuitry to create its audio landscape. Space Encounters gained some recognition appearing in the film Rocky III. Designed by Dave Needle, this gallery-style shooter offers a distinctive take on the space combat genre, challenging players with escalating speed and increasingly complex enemy encounters within an unusual setting.
