Super Pinball Action (US)
Tecmo • 1991

Tecmo’s Super Pinball Action, released in 1991, presents players with four distinct pinball tables to master. Each board offers unique objectives and challenges – on the Carnival table, targets must be hit to trigger rhythmic sequences; the Border table requires precise aim at “INPUT” buttons; the Monster table involves completing seven target areas themed around body parts; and the Sniper table necessitates knocking down drop targets before aiming for bonus shots. Progress through each level is visually represented by a changing character appearance; reaching the final stage of each board unveils a more revealing visual style. The game’s technical backbone features a Motorola 68000 processor alongside Zilog Z80 and YM3812 sound chips, contributing to its audio-visual presentation. Warping between tables is a key mechanic allowing players to gain extra balls when strategically employed. Super Pinball Action follows in the footsteps of Tecmo’s earlier Pinball Action, offering a single-player experience focused on skill and precision. A version released for the US market includes an anti-drug message screen, distinguishing it from the original Japanese release. The game provides a unique pinball experience with its varied table designs and evolving visual presentation as players advance.
