Sparkz (prototype)
Atari Games • 1992

Sparkz is a two-player puzzle game from Atari Games, created in 1992. This prototype blends elements of classic titles like Tetris and Pipe Dream into a unique gameplay experience. Players manipulate falling pieces to establish connections between red and blue points on the playfield, effectively creating pathways that contribute to the construction of a monster. Each successful connection adds another piece to the creature's form, starting with its head. The core challenge involves strategically rotating and positioning these components to build continuous circuits across the screen. Two players can compete simultaneously, each working towards completing their portion of the monster’s design. The game utilizes a Motorola 68000 processor for its operations and an OKI6295 chip for sound effects. Due to its complex nature and limited appeal during testing, Sparkz remained a rare prototype with only a few examples known to exist. While possessing an intriguing concept, Atari Games ultimately chose not to pursue further production of the title.
