Gameplay

Space Fury is a two-player cooperative shooter released by Sega in 1981, challenging players to dismantle alien spacecraft before they fully assemble. The gameplay revolves around destroying segments of spaceships that move across the screen towards each other; successfully preventing their combination results in higher scores and progression to new levels. Each level introduces unique shot patterns for your ship, demanding adaptable strategies. Between rounds, players have a brief opportunity to dock with upgrade shells – dark blue, green, or light blue – which enhance weapon capabilities by adding additional firing directions. Successfully docking grants a bonus based on remaining points from the previous round. The game’s vector graphics create a distinct visual style, and while memorable for its era, early arcade units were unfortunately prone to monitor overheating. As players advance, the enemy formations become increasingly complex, combining elements from previously cleared levels and requiring quick reflexes to avoid projectiles and ramming attacks from incomplete alien ships. Scoring is tied to segment destruction and level progression, with fireballs awarding a higher point value.
