Space Invaders DX (US, v2.1)
Taito Corporation • 1994

Space Invaders DX is a 1994 arcade shooter that builds upon Taito's classic 1978 hit. Players can choose from three distinct game modes: a faithful recreation of the original Space Invaders, complete with an approximation of the early color overlay effect; a two-player versus mode offering split-screen competition; and a parody mode featuring characters and graphics drawn from other Taito games like Bubble Bobble and The New Zealand Story. While gameplay remains true to the core formula of shooting descending aliens, each mode provides a fresh visual style and a nostalgic nod to Taito's history. Up to four players can participate in this gallery-style shooter, utilizing an 8-way joystick to control their laser cannons. The original game mode is available with either shared controls for two players or dedicated controls for both. The versus mode requires the dual-control upright cabinet, while the head-to-head cocktail cabinet allows for a unique face-off experience where the screen orientation flips between players. Space Invaders DX runs on Taito’s B System hardware and includes an operator menu with factory reset options introduced in revision 2.1 of the game, alongside anti-drug and recycling messages for its American release.
