Space Cruiser
Taito Corporation • 1981

Space Cruiser challenges players to defend Earth in this engaging 1981 shooter from Taito. As the pilot of a spacecraft, you navigate through five distinct stages, beginning with an encounter with UFOs and culminating in a final assault on enemy bases. Gameplay involves precise maneuvering using a two-way joystick; your task is to destroy incoming threats like asteroids, alien ships, and ultimately, enemy installations while carefully managing fuel and avoiding hazards. Successful docking at the space station provides both firepower upgrades and extra lives. The game incorporates unique elements such as digitized speech during launch countdown (though of limited audio fidelity) and brief snippets of music from Fantasia. Players cooperate in a two-player alternating mode to tackle the interstellar challenges, earning points for enemy destruction and completing stages without incident. A high score table allows up to ten players to immortalize their names, demonstrating skill against other pilots across time. A cocktail cabinet version, known as "T.T. Space Cruiser" in Japan, was also released. Scoring is meticulously tracked throughout the game, rewarding skillful play with bonuses for asteroid destruction and successful station docking, while penalizing careless shots fired during critical maneuvers.
