Gameplay

Space Duel is a vibrant, two-player shooter released by Atari in 1980 that utilizes a colorful vector graphics display—a notable advancement from earlier black and white systems. Players choose to pilot either a fighter ship or a heavily shielded space station, each presenting distinct gameplay challenges. Waves of targets appear at the screen’s edge, requiring skillful maneuvering and precise firing to destroy them; many objects split into smaller pieces as they are hit, demanding continued attention and accuracy. The game offers varied modes of play, allowing both players to control fighters or a space station for cooperative or competitive action. A unique feature allows players to target each other in fighter mode, temporarily disabling their opponent's ship. Bonus waves add extra excitement with fast-moving fuzzballs, stars, and saucers appearing to attack the player(s). Shields protect against damage but deplete over time, adding a layer of strategy to engagements. Space Duel represents Atari’s only multi-player interactive vector game, providing a unique and engaging experience for two players battling amidst a dazzling display of color and action.
