Son Son
Capcom • 1984

Capcom’s Son Son, released in 1984, is a cooperative platformer and shooter for two players. The game presents a constantly scrolling screen featuring a series of platforms upon which players control characters reminiscent of figures from Chinese folklore. Players navigate these platforms by jumping between them, with the ability to slightly speed up or slow down movement relative to the advancing screen. Combat involves firing energy blasts from staves; contact with enemies results in lost lives, but temporary invincibility is granted upon losing a life and reappearing on a cloud. Collecting fruit scattered throughout the levels awards points, which can lead to extra lives. Certain platforms trigger bamboo shoots bursting forth for bonus scoring opportunities. The game’s soundtrack features early work by composer Tamayo Kawamoto, who would later contribute significantly to other Capcom titles. Son Son marks Capcom's second published title and their first release in the United States.
