Sonic Boom (FD1094 317-0053)
Sega • 1987

Sonic Boom is a two-player vertically scrolling shooter released by Sega in 1987. As pilots of advanced aircraft, players navigate through increasingly challenging environments while battling waves of enemy forces. Utilizing an eight-way joystick and two buttons for firing, the gameplay focuses on precise maneuvering to dodge projectiles and destroy targets as you ascend. The game’s visuals are presented using Sega System 16B hardware, which provides a detailed scrolling backdrop and vibrant sprite work. A combination of sound chips—including Yamaha YM2151 and UPD7759—provides the audio accompaniment to the action. Sonic Boom initially debuted in Japan during December of that year. Ports of this title were later made available for home computers including the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64, Atari ST, and Commodore Amiga.
