Gameplay

SegaSonic The Hedgehog launched in Japanese arcades in 1993, offering a unique take on the familiar platforming action. Players control Sonic, joined by Ray and Mighty, as they attempt to foil Dr. Robotnik’s latest scheme from his island base, Eggman Island. Presented with an isometric perspective, gameplay involves running, jumping, and navigating scrolling levels filled with traps like lava flows and collapsing platforms while collecting golden rings. The game retains classic Sonic elements such as the ability to defeat enemies by bouncing on their heads. Players utilize a trackball for movement and a single button for actions, creating a distinct control scheme compared to console versions. Though initially rumored for a Sega 32X port, technical challenges with replicating the trackball controls prevented its release. SegaSonic The Hedgehog introduced Ray and Mighty as playable characters, marking their first appearance in the Sonic franchise. As part of an arcade series, it represents an early foray into three-dimensional presentation within the broader Sonic universe.
