Solar Quest (rev 10 8 81)
Cinematronics • 1981

Piloting a lone spacecraft against an encroaching alien menace, Solar Quest tasks players with navigating a field of increasingly challenging foes around a central sun. Using thrust, rotation, fire, and hyperspace buttons, you must destroy waves of alien ships that emerge from the screen's edge, while also managing survivors – creatures left behind when ships are destroyed, which drift toward the sun unless captured or eliminated. As play progresses, the sun’s gravitational pull intensifies, and the aliens become faster and more aggressive, eventually gaining the ability to fire upon the player’s ship. Careful use of hyperspace is crucial for quick escapes, though overuse will temporarily disable its functionality, leaving you vulnerable. Destroying alien ships earns points, with bonus rewards given for capturing survivors; accumulating enough captures grants an extra spacecraft. Nuke weapons provide a powerful means of clearing large groups of enemies, but must be strategically deployed as they can be detonated prematurely. Developed in just ninety days to fill Cinematronics' trade show lineup, Solar Quest represents the final vector game from the company utilizing a black and white monitor with color overlays to create its distinctive visual style. The game progresses through phases, steadily increasing the difficulty with more ships, increased speed, and alien weaponry.
