Snap Jack
Universal • 1981

Navigate scrolling landscapes in Snap Jack, a cooperative platform game for two players released by Universal in 1981. As a character reminiscent of Pac-Man, you traverse horizontally moving environments filled with hills and tunnels while collecting items. The gameplay combines elements of running and jumping with the need to avoid various obstacles – giant fish, squid-like creatures, and hazards suspended from an overhead conveyor system like kettles and boots. Players control their characters using an eight-way joystick, coordinating movements to overcome challenges together. This game offers a unique blend of familiar mechanics; expect to find echoes of both Pac-Man’s maze navigation and Scramble’s scrolling action as you progress through the levels. Snap Jack first appeared in Japan during October of 1981. The game's visuals utilize a palette of thirty-two colors across a resolution of 240 x 192 pixels, driven by two Texas Instruments sound chips and a Zilog Z80 processor. A port of the game later appeared on Commodore C64 computers under the title "Wheelin’ Wallie."
