Sky Skipper — Gameplay
Gameplay

In Sky Skipper, released by Nintendo in 1981, players take on the role of pilots tasked with rescuing a king and his royal family from giant gorillas who have seized their kingdom. As a cooperative two-player game, you navigate a maze-like environment maneuvering your plane to locate and free captured characters caged within the gorilla’s domain. To accomplish this, players drop bombs to dislodge the gorillas while simultaneously catching the rescued individuals with their aircraft. Successfully clearing each stage requires careful attention; fuel must be replenished, and collisions with the environment avoided. The game utilizes a Zilog Z80 processor and General Instrument AY8910 sound chip, creating a visual experience set at a resolution of 512x448 pixels with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Familiar melodies recognizable from other Nintendo games like Donkey Kong can be heard throughout the gameplay. Originally released in Japan, Sky Skipper controls are straightforward: an eight-way joystick and two buttons allow for precise aerial maneuvering. A port of this arcade title was later made available on the Atari 2600 console.
