Step up to the table in Side Pocket, a two-player pool game released by Data East in 1986. Players use an eight-way joystick to precisely position their cue and then press buttons to execute shots, aiming to sink balls and clear the table. The game features a realistic depiction of billiards gameplay, challenging players with increasingly difficult layouts and angles. Side Pocket’s sound design is notable for its use of multiple sound chips which contribute to an authentic arcade atmosphere. It was followed by two sequels on Sega Saturn in later years, solidifying its place within the Side Pocket series. The game saw numerous ports to home consoles over the following decade, including versions for the NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, and Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
