Developed by Alpha Denshi Co., licensed from Tehkan, Shougi is a two-player tabletop game released in 1982. This arcade adaptation brings the classic Japanese board game—similar to chess—to the arcade screen. Two players use eight-way joysticks and button controls to strategically move pieces across a virtual board, aiming to checkmate their opponent’s king. The gameplay mirrors traditional Shougi rules, demanding careful planning and tactical maneuvering from both participants. Players must anticipate their rival's moves while protecting their own pieces. Shougi represents Alpha Denshi’s second game in the series, following the original 1980 release. A computer port of the game later appeared on the PC 8801 in 1984. Utilizing Zilog Z80 and ALPHA-8201 processors alongside a General Instrument AY8910 sound chip, Shougi offers an engaging challenge for fans of strategy games and those interested in experiencing this unique form of tabletop competition.
