Shanghai Kid is a two-player versus fighting game released in 1985 by Taiyo System under license from Data East. Originally known as Hokuha Syourin Hiryu no Ken in Japan, this arcade title initiated a series of games featuring martial arts combat and dragon themes that would later expand to home consoles like the Nintendo Famicom and Game Boy. Players choose one of two characters and engage in close-quarters fighting with punches, kicks, and special moves designed to deplete their opponent's health bar. The gameplay focuses on strategic positioning and timing as players attempt to outmaneuver and attack each other. Mastering different martial arts techniques is key to victory against a rival fighter. Shanghai Kid established the foundation for subsequent installments in the series, which included titles such as Flying Dragon - The Secret Scroll and several entries for Nintendo platforms. While primarily an arcade release, Shanghai Kid represents the beginning of a larger franchise that would see numerous sequels and spin-offs across multiple gaming systems over the following decade.
