Shanghai II is a tabletop game for two players released in 1989 by Sunsoft, inspired by Szechuan-style solitaire mahjong. Players manipulate sets of tiles to clear the board, strategically matching and removing pieces to achieve their goals while subtly hindering their opponent's progress. Utilizing an eight-way joystick and three buttons, gameplay involves carefully planning moves and anticipating your competitor’s actions in this engaging puzzle experience. The game presents a unique blend of strategic thinking and spatial reasoning as players seek to complete sets and dismantle the tile arrangement. Success depends on foresight and calculated decisions, making each match a contest of wits between two players. Shanghai II builds upon the original Shanghai released the previous year, and spawned several sequels and ports across various platforms in subsequent years. Originally appearing in arcades, versions were later made available for home computers and handheld consoles such as the Sega Game Gear. The game's distinctive visuals and engaging puzzle mechanics helped establish a popular series of tabletop arcade games.
