Tecmo’s Shadow Warriors, released in Europe in early 1989, delivers fast-paced martial arts action across a series of scrolling backgrounds. Two players take control of ninja warriors battling through waves of enemies using a variety of attacks including punches, kicks, and projectile weapons like shurikens. The game utilizes a 2.5D perspective, allowing for depth and dynamic movement as characters leap and dodge opponents on multiple planes. Gameplay involves navigating linear stages while defeating foes to advance toward the next area. Players can utilize a jump attack, along with various weapon pickups found throughout each level. Shadow Warriors originated in Japan under the title “Ninja Ryukenden,” and served as the basis for subsequent releases across numerous platforms including NES, Sega Master System, and home computers. This arcade release marked the beginning of a franchise that would later evolve into the well-known Ninja Gaiden series. Ports of the game appeared on systems like the ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, Game Gear, and even found its way to Nintendo’s Virtual Console for Wii.
