Samurai Shodown / Samurai Spirits (NGM-045)
SNK • 1993

Step into feudal Japan and engage in weapon-based combat with Samurai Shodown, a fighting game for two players that debuted on the Neo-Geo platform in 1993. Select from twelve distinct characters, each inspired by historical figures, folklore, or popular anime like Ninja Scroll, and battle across traditional Japanese settings. Players control their chosen warrior using an eight-way joystick and four buttons to execute light and medium attacks with weapons, or punches and kicks when unarmed. The game introduced a unique fighting system centered around realistic weapon clashes and strategic positioning. Successful matches culminate in bonus rounds and encounters with a powerful end boss. Some characters even display unique behaviors and animations such as a character’s ability to trigger amusing secret poses or experiencing alternate ending sequences based on gameplay choices. Beyond the core combat, Samurai Shodown distinguishes itself through its commitment to authentic Japanese elements, including spoken dialogue in fluent Japanese and traditional music tracks. The game also features a distinctive visual style built upon an upgraded graphics engine previously used in SNK’s Art of Fighting.
