Samurai Shodown V Special / Samurai Spirits Zero Special (NGM-2720)
Yuki Enterprise / SNK Playmore • 2004

Samurai Shodown V Special, also known as Samurai Spirits Zero Special in Japan, delivers intense two-player versus fighting action on SNK's Neo-Geo MVS hardware. This installment builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, Samurai Spirits Zero, featuring a roster of twenty-four returning fighters alongside four new additions: Amakusa, Gaoh, Zankuro, and Mizuki. Players utilize an eight-way joystick and four buttons to execute light attacks, medium attacks, kicks/defenses, and special maneuvers like rolls and dodges in stylized samurai combat. The game's narrative structure incorporates a unique progression system; defeating certain bosses unlocks access to the true final encounters with powerful adversaries such as Amakusa, Zankuro, Gao, and Muzuki. Failure to defeat these bosses through conventional means results in an alternate ending. Released in 2004, this title represented SNK Playmore's last major release for the Neo-Geo MVS platform before shifting focus to other technologies. A small NeoGeo sticker on the cartridge identifies corrected versions of the game which resolved initial bugs and provided a more polished experience. A farewell message printed on the original Japanese box acknowledged the loyalty of Neo-Geo fans, marking a significant moment in the console’s history.
