Salamander (version D)
Konami • 1986
Also known as: Lifeforce

Konami’s Salamander, released in 1986, is a thrilling sequel to the acclaimed Nemesis. As a pilot tasked with infiltrating a monstrous organism, players navigate through a series of challenging side-scrolling and vertically scrolling levels, blasting away organic obstacles and enemy fighters. The game features an innovative weapon system allowing for strategic power-ups like speed boosts, missiles, lasers, force fields, and multiple shot capabilities – though the laser and ripple laser cannot be used simultaneously. Players must carefully manage their resources and reflexes to survive encounters with massive bosses and constant barrages of projectiles, including erupting solar flares in a particularly treacherous lava level. The game’s design introduced unique visual elements, such as growing obstructions that appear unexpectedly on screen. Salamander is a two-player cooperative experience demanding skill and teamwork to overcome the escalating challenges within. The arcade version known as Salamander was later released in North America under the title Life Force, while a subsequent Japanese release adopted both names. Its influence can be seen in later, more complex “Danmaku” style shooters.
