Rolling Thunder (rev 3)
Namco • 1986

Step into the role of Albatross, a secret agent tasked with dismantling the criminal organization Geldra in Namco’s Rolling Thunder. This side-scrolling platform shooter combines action and strategy as you navigate ten stages across two distinct stories, each presenting escalating challenges. Armed initially with only a pistol, players must carefully manage ammunition while searching for powerful automatic weapons hidden within doors scattered throughout each level. Gameplay involves jumping between platforms and strategically engaging masked enemies who employ varied attack patterns – some throw grenades, others crouch to fire, adding complexity to the combat. Ammo rooms offer replenishment, while reinforced doors guard more potent weaponry. Success requires precise movement, resource management, and a keen eye for enemy placement as you work towards rescuing captured agent Lelia Blitz and confronting Geldra’s leader, Maboo. Rolling Thunder introduced innovative features like multiple ammo room visits through clever maneuvering and the ability to perform amusing "moonwalk" animations just before being pulled into doorways – demonstrating a playful depth beyond its core action gameplay. The game was notable as the first Jamma game ever produced.
