Gameplay

Take command of a river patrol vessel in River Patrol, an arcade game from Orca released in Japan in 1981. As captain, your task is to navigate the waters and rescue people who have fallen into the river, but the journey isn’t straightforward. Numerous obstacles like boulders, crocodiles, and drifting logs impede your progress and threaten to capsize your ship. The gameplay unfolds from a top-down perspective, challenging players to skillfully maneuver their boat through the hazardous environment. Two players can cooperate, each controlling a patrol vessel in an effort to save as many people as possible while avoiding disaster. Simple controls consisting of a two-way joystick and single button allow for focused navigation and quick reactions. Interestingly, an unauthorized copy of River Patrol was produced by Falcon under the name Silver Land, which reimagined the game's premise entirely with a skiing theme instead of river rescue. The original version remains a unique example of early 1980s arcade gaming, powered by a Zilog Z80 processor and General Instrument sound chip.
