Gameplay

Route 16 is a fast-paced maze driving game for two players released in 1981. Players control a car navigating through sixteen distinct routes filled with twists, turns, and dead ends as they attempt to evade three pursuing vehicles. Each route presents unique challenges, including the appearance of dollar signs that award points when collected, but can unexpectedly transform into oil slicks hindering progress. The game incorporates special symbols like question marks which may reveal either a scoring bell or an explosive bomb, demanding careful maneuvering and strategic decision-making. A key mechanic involves strategically using a speed boost to escape pursuers; however, this consumes fuel, which is rewarded at the end of each round. Throughout gameplay, players will encounter flags that temporarily turn enemy cars into point-scoring opportunities, alongside other special events like an attacking monster or even the chance to gain a second car. As rounds progress, the difficulty escalates with more dollar signs and additional chase vehicles appearing on screen, testing both skill and fuel management.
