Gameplay

Step into a whimsical garden maze in Namco’s Rompers, a cooperative arcade game for two players released in 1989. As Chap, a gardener with a straw hat, your mission is to navigate sixty-one uniquely designed gardens, collecting all the keys on each level to rescue his girlfriend, Rumina. Along the way, you'll encounter an assortment of quirky enemies like flame-breathing Triceratops and ice-breathing seals, and can strategically push walls to temporarily crush them - though they quickly return as eggs. The game presents a constant challenge with timed levels and the looming threat of Tsukaima, a green-haired vampire who appears when time runs out. Later rounds introduce even more bizarre adversaries, culminating in a final showdown against an evil scientist and his clones. Interspersed throughout the gameplay are short animated sequences called "The Rompers Show." Upon completing the game, a peculiar scene unfolds: Chap bandages Tsukaima's feet before carrying her off, much to Rumina’s dismay. Rompers offers a unique blend of maze navigation, puzzle-solving, and cooperative action on Namco System 1 hardware.
