Rock Climber
Taito • 1981

Scale treacherous cliffs in Taito’s Rock Climber, released in Japan in 1981. Two players simultaneously control climbers ascending a mountain wall, using double eight-way joysticks to direct their movements left, right, up, and down. The goal is simple: reach the summit before time runs out and avoid falling—a misstep sends your climber plummeting back down, costing precious seconds. The game’s visual presentation features a stark, vertical playing field showcasing the climbers' progress against a backdrop of rocky terrain. Small ledges provide momentary respite from the relentless climb, though they also present opportunities for opponents to strategically impede each other's ascent. A tone generator provides basic sound effects accompanying the action. Rock Climber's straightforward mechanics and cooperative (or competitive!) gameplay offer an engaging challenge for two players seeking a test of coordination and timing.
