The Adventures of Robby Roto!
Dave Nutting Associates / Bally Midway • 1981

In The Adventures of Robby Roto, you take on the role of a mentor guiding Robby, a quirky subterranean explorer tasked with rescuing hostages and recovering stolen treasures from the villainous Voltar. This maze-digging game for two players requires strategic direction as Robby navigates increasingly complex tunnels beneath the Earth’s surface, following Voltar's trail to confront him directly. Adding to the challenge are giant spiders and a shape-shifting troll, both capable of burrowing through solid rock, relentlessly hunting Robby based on Voltar's guidance. Players must carefully maneuver Robby using a four-way joystick, utilizing a single "Magic" button that grants temporary invisibility for escapes or crucial moments. Successfully recovering hostages and treasures earns points, with values multiplying as you progress deeper into the game. The difficulty escalates over time, introducing disembodied teeth to track Robby’s movements, demanding increasingly precise navigation and tactical use of the Magic button to survive. Bonus Rotos are awarded periodically for completing sets of levels, providing a welcome boost to your score. Designed by Jay Fenton, Pat Lawlor, and Dave Nutting, The Adventures of Robby Roto offers a unique cooperative experience where player skill is paramount in overcoming Voltar’s defenses and achieving victory.
