Red Clash
Kaneko • 1981

Pilots take to the skies in Red Clash, a two-player vertical shooter released by Kaneko in 1981. Players control spaceships maneuvering through waves of enemy formations using an eight-way joystick and a single button for firing. The game features a Zilog Z80 processor running at 4 Mhz and challenges players to survive increasingly difficult encounters as they ascend the screen. Originally developed by Kaneko, Red Clash was later distributed by Tehkan, which would eventually become Tecmo. Two players can cooperate in their efforts to defeat the oncoming threats. The initial high score table credits Kaneko’s involvement in the game's creation. An early version of Red Clash included a noticeable difference in gameplay during the attract mode; the player-controlled ship remained stationary. Later, this was updated to provide a more dynamic demonstration for onlookers. A port of the title appeared on the Emerson Arcadia console shortly after its original release.
