Red Alert
Irem (GDI license) • 1981
Also known as: WW III

In Red Alert, released in North America in 1981 under license from Irem, two players cooperate to defend against waves of approaching enemy aircraft. This Japanese-developed gallery shooter challenges players to strategically target and destroy incoming threats using a limited number of shots. As the game progresses, the intensity increases with more numerous and varied adversaries appearing on screen. Players control stationary gun emplacements positioned along the bottom edge of the display, aiming upwards to intercept the airborne assaults. Successful hits eliminate enemy planes while missed shots result in penalties. The objective is to survive increasingly difficult sequences and protect vital installations from destruction. Red Alert presents a straightforward but engaging experience emphasizing precision and teamwork as players navigate the escalating challenges of this early shooter.
