Gameplay

Navigate a perilous nuclear reactor core in Gottlieb's 1982 maze shooter, Reactor. Players control a cursor within a screen-sized arena using a trackball, maneuvering around a central gravitational source and deadly walls. Enemy particles, representing radioactive elements, populate the space, bouncing off surfaces and actively pursuing the player. Success depends on precise acceleration timing to maintain momentum while avoiding contact with both the reactor core and the environment. Strategic gameplay involves deploying decoys to lure enemies into traps or manipulate them toward control rods for bonus points and a reset of the shrinking arena. A high-power mode offers increased repulsion but also raises the risk of collision, demanding careful management. As time progresses, the reactor core changes form, presenting an even greater challenge as its lethal nature limits maneuverability. Reactor features unique controls and physics that set it apart from traditional shooters, offering a tense and deliberate experience requiring skill and precision to survive the escalating threat within the reactor’s confines. The game was notable for being the first arcade title to credit the developer on its screen.
