Rainbow Islands (rev 1)
Taito Corporation • 1987

Returning from their dinosaur forms in Bubble Bobble, Bub and Bob now find themselves tasked with saving the Rainbow Islands from a fresh wave of enemies. As one or two players – competing against each other rather than cooperating as in the previous game – you control either Bub or Bob, utilizing a unique mechanic to navigate vibrant, multi-layered environments. The core gameplay revolves around generating solid rainbow bridges that serve as both platforms and weapons; collapse them on foes for instant defeat, or strategically trap enemies before crushing them to collect valuable bonus gems. Each of the seven islands presents four distinct challenges, demanding quick reflexes and careful planning to reach the top within a time limit. Power-ups like multiple rainbows, speed boosts, and temporary invulnerability are scattered throughout the levels, offering advantages in your quest. Clever players will discover hidden areas containing useful items and shortcuts – alongside tributes to other classic Taito titles such as Arkanoid. A wide range of secrets and unlockable content await skilled players, including unique bonuses earned by meticulously managing rainbow placement and enemy encounters. With its colorful graphics, catchy soundtrack (featuring a brief nod to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow"), and inventive gameplay, Rainbow Islands offers a challenging and rewarding arcade experience for both seasoned platforming fans and newcomers alike.
