Gameplay

Taito’s Ray Storm, released in 1996, continues the intense space combat established by its predecessor, Rayforce. Players pilot an advanced fighter craft on a desperate mission to defend Earth from a powerful interstellar federation that has turned against humanity. The game's narrative unfolds across eight stages set between 2219 and 2219 AD, beginning with defense of Earth and culminating in a final confrontation far beyond the planet’s orbit. Two players can simultaneously engage the enemy forces using an 8-way joystick to maneuver and six buttons for firing weaponry including lock-on lasers. Ray Storm builds on the original's gameplay with enhanced visuals powered by Taito's FX-1B hardware, presenting a more detailed and dynamic environment than its predecessor. The game’s story is revealed minimally during play, but maps of key locations are shown in an "Extra Mode" unlocking additional context to the unfolding events. Players must navigate challenging enemy formations and environmental hazards while striving to protect Earth from complete annihilation. The experience is a fast-paced vertical scrolling shooter demanding precision and quick reflexes as you battle overwhelming odds in this thrilling sequel.
