Gameplay

Rampart challenges up to three players in a unique blend of strategy and action, tasking them with constructing fortified castles using Tetris-like pieces. Each player must build their castle walls and place cannons within before time runs out, then engage in a battle against enemy forces – either other players or waves of ships and ground troops depending on the game mode. After each skirmish, the rebuilding phase begins; failure to completely enclose your keep with solid walls results in defeat. The gameplay involves careful planning both in castle construction and cannon targeting, as players attempt to destroy their opponents' defenses while protecting their own. In single-player mode, incoming ships will release ground troops that must be fended off alongside the naval assault. The game’s distinctive trackball control allows for precise aiming and maneuvering during both the building and battle phases. Originally released in 1990 as a dedicated three-player model, Rampart quickly gained popularity and later received a conversion kit option for two players using a standard joystick. This arcade classic showcases Atari Games' innovative approach to the shooter genre, combining puzzle elements with strategic combat across an island setting reminiscent of Jersey in the Channel Islands.
