Gameplay

Qwak is a single-player puzzle game created by Atari in 1982, though it remained a prototype and was never publicly released. The gameplay revolves around rearranging numbered tiles within a vertical playing field using an eight-way joystick to slide them into the correct order—a variation on the familiar fifteen-puzzle concept. Colorful animations accompany the tile movements, adding visual appeal to the challenge of solving each puzzle arrangement. The game’s development is notable for its brief exploration as a potential touch-screen title; however, player feedback during testing indicated that a traditional joystick and button control scheme would be preferable. Designed by Mark Cerny, Qwak utilizes Atari 6502 Color Raster hardware and features distinctive “Motion Objects” for displaying text elements—a unique characteristic shared with another Atari game, Missile Command 2. With a resolution of 240x256 pixels and a palette of sixteen colors, the presentation is constrained by the technology of its time. Despite this, Qwak offers a glimpse into an experimental design process within Atari’s development labs and showcases one possible direction for puzzle game interfaces in the early 1980s.
