Quarterback (rev 5)
Leland Corporation • 1987

Leland Corporation’s Quarterback, released in 1987, puts two players head-to-head in a football simulation experience. Players control their team's offense, calling plays and guiding their quarterback down the field to score touchdowns. Using a single button and joystick, each player manages all aspects of their offensive drive – from handing off the ball to throwing long passes – attempting to outmaneuver their opponent’s defense. The game is the first entry in a series that would later include John Elway's Team Quarterback and All American Football. Two Zilog Z80 processors handle the main gameplay, while an I80186 processor manages the sound effects and music created by Dave Cartt, Mike Marsh, and Sam Powell. Graphics were designed by Kevin Lydy with technical assistance from Patrick Curran, contributing to a detailed depiction of football action on screen. Quarterback offers a straightforward, competitive sports challenge for two players, requiring strategic play-calling and skillful control to advance the ball and ultimately win the game.
