Gameplay

Navigate the subatomic realm in Quantum, a unique puzzle game from General Computer Corporation released under Atari license in 1982. As a probe, your goal is to encircle various particles using a trackball controller, destroying them for points. Successfully capturing nuclei triggers a chain reaction; electrons transform into positrons, which also award points if encircled before they disappear. The gameplay intensifies as you encounter diverse and dangerous elements – pulsating Pulsars that destroy contact, fast-moving Photons, Splitters that divide, and diamond-shaped Triphons. Later levels introduce bonds between nuclei that must be navigated carefully; red bonds are impassable while yellow ones can be safely crossed. Mastering particle movement patterns—white particles move vertically, colored ones diagonally—is key to survival and maximizing your score. A distinctive feature of Quantum allows players to leave their mark on the high score table by “signing” their name with the trackball, adding a personal touch to this challenging vector-graphics experience. With only a limited number of cabinets ever produced, experiencing Quantum is a rare opportunity to delve into an unusual and innovative arcade title.
