Gameplay

Metro’s Puzzli, released in Japan in 1995, is a two-player puzzle arcade game built around dropping colored blocks to create horizontal lines and clear them from the playfield. Two players compete simultaneously on separate screens; each must strategically position falling shapes to outscore their opponent. The goal is simple: eliminate as many rows of blocks as possible before your screen fills up. Gameplay involves using an 8-way joystick to rotate and move incoming blocks, dropping them into place with the button press. Clever manipulation of these shapes – squares, lines, L-shapes, and more – is key to preventing a game over. The vibrant visuals utilize a palette of thousands of colors for eye-catching block designs across a horizontal screen resolution of 320 x 224 pixels. Puzzli initiated a series that would continue with Puzzli 2 and Puzzli 2 Super, building upon the core puzzle mechanics established in this original release. A team of designers, programmers, and sound artists contributed to the game’s development.
