Compile’s Puyo Puyo Sun arrived in arcades in November 1996 and represents the third installment in their popular puzzle series. Designed for up to four players simultaneously, this drop-style game challenges players to strategically clear connected groups of colorful "puyos" from the playing field. By carefully positioning falling blocks, players aim to create chains of three or more puyos of matching color, causing them to disappear and prevent the screen from filling up. The title itself is a play on words, referencing the game’s place as the third entry in the Puyo Puyo arcade lineage – “sun” being a pun for "san," meaning three in Japanese. Running on Sega ST-V hardware, this fast-paced puzzle experience demands quick reflexes and strategic thinking to outmaneuver opponents and maintain control of the screen. Following its initial arcade release, Puyo Puyo Sun found its way onto various home consoles including the Sega Saturn, Nintendo 64, and Sony PlayStation in Japan, extending the gameplay beyond the arcade environment.
