Puyo Puyo 2 (Japan)
Compile (Sega license) • 1994

In Puyo Puyo 2, two players compete in a frantic puzzle game where differently colored “puyos” fall from above. The objective is to link four or more puyos of the same color together to make them disappear, clearing space and sending garbage blocks to your opponent's field. This sequel builds upon the original’s addictive gameplay with slightly refined mechanics, maintaining its core appeal of strategic planning and quick reflexes as you attempt to outmaneuver your rival. The Japanese title, "Puyo Puyo Tsu," is a playful pun; “Tsu” has no inherent meaning but sounds like “Two,” marking it as the second installment in the series. Players control their falling puyos using an eight-way joystick, rotating and positioning them to create chains and combos. Careful management of your own field while simultaneously sending troublesome blocks to your opponent is key to victory. The game’s simple premise belies a surprisingly deep level of skill and competitive potential, encouraging repeated play as you strive for higher scores and mastery of the chain reactions. Originally released in arcades in 1994, Puyo Puyo 2 ran on Sega's System C-2 hardware and quickly became a popular fixture in Japanese game centers. Its success led to numerous ports across various home consoles and handheld devices throughout the mid to late 1990s.
