Gameplay

Published in Japan in 1994, Poto Poto is a two-player puzzle game from Sega built on their System C-2 hardware. The gameplay centers around manipulating falling blocks to create scoring opportunities for yourself and hindering your opponent. Players use an eight-way joystick and a single button to rotate and drop the shapes into a shared playing field. The name "Poto Poto" is derived from Japanese onomatopoeia, evoking the sound of large raindrops. Two players compete simultaneously, strategically positioning falling pieces to build combinations while also attempting to disrupt their competitor’s progress. Skillful manipulation and quick thinking are key to success in this simple yet engaging arcade experience. Programmed by Shinobu Hayashi and Akinobu Abe, with design contributions from Makoto Yamamoto, Poto Poto provides a unique cooperative-competitive challenge for two players.
