Pop'n Music Animelo
Konami • 2000

Pop'n Music Animelo is a music game released by Konami in 2000 and part of their BEMANI series. A single player controls the action, tapping colorful buttons that appear on screen in sync with animated visuals. The gameplay centers around hitting these designated buttons as musical notes scroll downwards; successful button presses complete missing elements within the song’s soundtrack. The game utilizes a unique system where players react to visual cues and timing rather than traditional button mashing or rhythm matching. Nine distinct, brightly colored buttons are used throughout each track, adding an element of pattern recognition alongside rhythmic precision. “Animelo” itself is derived from "Animation Melody," hinting at the strong connection between music and animated visuals present in the game’s presentation. Running on Konami's Firebeat hardware, Pop'n Music Animelo incorporates both CD-ROM and DVD-ROM technology for program execution and audio playback respectively. It was followed by a sequel released later that same year.
