Ponpoko — Gameplay
Gameplay

Sigma Enterprises’ Ponpoko, released in 1982, delivers cooperative platforming action for two players. Taking control of a Tanuki – a Japanese raccoon dog – each player navigates levels filled with ladders, floors, and gaps while dodging red and yellow snakes. The goal is to collect all the fruits and vegetables present on each screen to progress through the game. Gameplay involves precise jumps and climbs as you avoid hazards and contend with baskets that may contain valuable points or further obstacles in the form of snakes. Levels culminate in a "beer mug" stage, which then repeats endlessly, providing an extended challenge for persistent players. This upright arcade cabinet utilizes a Zilog Z80 processor and Namco sound chip to create a simple yet engaging experience, offering two-player fun through a four-way joystick and single jump button. A cocktail table version of Ponpoko was also released.
