Pong Doubles — Gameplay
Gameplay

Released in 1973 by Atari, Pong Doubles expands on the original video game sensation by introducing four-player gameplay. Two players control paddles on each side of the screen, with one player positioned ahead and another behind. The objective remains simple: use your paddle to volley a ball past the opposing team and prevent it from passing yours. Gameplay requires teamwork as pairs strategize to return the ball effectively against their rivals. Like its predecessor, Pong Doubles utilizes straightforward controls and focuses on reactive gameplay – anticipating the ball's trajectory is key to success. The game’s structure mirrors that of the original, but with the added dynamic of coordinating two players per side. Notably known as "Coupe Davis" in France, Pong Doubles represents an early experiment in multiplayer arcade experiences, bridging the gap between solitary pong matches and more complex team-based video games. It followed the release of the initial Pong title and preceded later iterations like Quadra Pong.
